Fortnite's PC community has long rallied against the game's Legacy Controls setting, and Epic has announced the option will be completely removed on all platforms by March 13. The news arrives courtesy of a Fortnite Status tweet that outlines the official solution to a very complex problem.
"With the improvements we've made to Aim Assist, we plan to remove the 'Use Legacy Look Controls' setting on March 13," the tweet reads. "To use the new settings and maintain your legacy sensitivities, select 'Copy from Legacy' in the Controller Options and toggle off 'Use Legacy Look Controls."'
Those not so in tune with Fortnite's intricacies may not understand precisely what this announcement means, but it's a huge development for diehard fans. As those who've shuffled around Fortnite's various menus will know, Legacy Controls is one option of several presets for controller players to use. While it's intent is to offer a classic Fortnite feel with average aim assist, pros and casuals alike have begun exploiting the feature for nefarious purposes.
As seen in the clip below, it's become public knowledge throughout Fortnite Chapter 2 that this aim assist can be used to track opponents in unfair ways. When tapping the triggers, the third-person camera offers a slight zoom toward any players in range. Do this enough times in quick succession, and it becomes far easier than it should be to pinpoint an enemy's exact location. Issues became even more complicated with the introduction of wallhacks, where players could leverage this Legacy Control spam technique to target players through walls. Those issues have been mostly stamped out, but Legacy Controls' dominance remains.
This trend was all the more frustrating to Fortnite's PC audience, that uses keyboard-and-mouse input that doesn't offer Legacy Controls. While crossplay on its own is a great concept, there can't be situations where certain platforms have measurable advantages over others.
So, as described in the tweet, Legacy Controls will be removed, but users will be able to swap their base sensitivity settings using the "Copy from Legacy" option. This essentially copies a portion of your Legacy Controls over to other options like Linear or Exponential aim assist. It should be known, however, that both these options will play drastically different from Legacy. If Epic plays its cards right, the new default controller option can still offer a traditional Fortnite feel without the extra spam. Rack up those Eliminations while you still can Legacy Control users, because the party's about to end.
Fortnite is available now on PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC and mobile. Legacy Controls will be removed from all platforms March 13.
