We weren't expecting to get Rickrolled by anything in 2020, but Fortnite defied expectations. The game has added a new Never Gonna Give You Up emote to the game, and it introduced it in the only way possible.
In a video titled "Watch How This Bear Made the Unlikeliest of Friends," the official Fortnite YouTube channel featured a cute picture of a polar bear as the thumbnail. Once you click on the video, however, you're met with a fish doing Rick Astley's infamous dance. It's available through the in-game shop for 500 V-bucks.
Rickrolling, a term used for misleading viewers into watching Astley's Never Gonna Give You Up music video, is a time-honored tradition that began around 2006.
The game has revived a meme that had mostly died years ago, and Astley himself is thrilled. The singer tweeted out the video, stressing that it is a limited-time item from the game's shop. He previously even surprised attendees at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade back in 2008, which probably should have been the final Rickroll in history.
Players on Reddit have even taken to recreating the song's original music video using the new emote. If this results in a revival of the meme and no longer being able to trust video thumbnails, we only have Epic Games to blame.
