Fortnite
EpicWe have reached the âendâ of Fortnite Chapter 2, season 1, or at least what was supposed to be the end. Weâve gone through nine weeks of challenges, and there do not appear to be any more on the horizon. Epic has announced theyâve taken the unprecedented step of extending this season all the way until February, leaving many to wonderâ¦what the hell is everyone going to be doing for the next two months?
Hereâs what Epic said specifically when they announced this lengthy extension in a weirdly short blog post:
âLast year we celebrated 14 Days of Fortnite over the holidays. This year weâve got even more content for you to unwrap, including new game features, free rewards and a live experience that you wonât want to miss. To prepare for all the new holiday-themed updates, we will be extending Chapter 2âs first season into early February. Get ready for winter!â
Previously, Epic has layered holiday events on top of existing seasons, so it doesnât make a ton of sense that the season would have to be extended by two months to accommodate that. I do wonder if the âlive experience you wonât want to missâ is supposed to be this JJ Abrams preview of an exclusive Star Wars scene on December 14, which will probably end up being more than that, and may lead into a larger Star Wars event.

EpicBut a Star Wars event and Christmas event donât solve the issue of abandoning weekly challenges and perhaps more importantly, not putting out another seasonal battle pass for two months. The main point of the Fortnite grind each season (other than you know, having fun while playing) is to get through all 100 ranks of the battle pass for all the rewards. Now, everyone has extra time to do that, but the people who were getting through all 100 ranks of the pass anyway will run out of runway after that. And what time would normally be spent grinding in the next seasonâs battle pass will now be spent just doingâ¦holiday event stuff? Iâm not even sure.
Itâs been an exceedingly weird season for Fortnite, with minimal communication from Epic, barely any new additions to the game or map, and really the game has just been coasting after introducing the new map in the admittedly very good finale to Chapter 1. But instead of surfing the wave of that momentum, Epic has really dialed back and now we have this bloated, 4+ month season that feels like itâs never going to end. Itâs hard to believe that itâs been this long and weâre just now reaching the halfway point right now.
I am sure Epic will come up with something to fill time here, but the traditional challenges/battle pass system does not seem like it will be in place over the next two months, rather just an extended grind for the stuff we already have. I expect large Christmas event, I expect a larger Star Wars even past the Risky Reels viewing of a single scene, but weâll see what else is in store.
