"League of Legends" won Game of the Year and its studio Publisher of the Year at the 2019 Esports Awards, with "Fortnite" world champion Bugha receiving a Rookie of the Year and Player of the Year accolade.
With Riot Games receiving both Publisher of the Year and Game of the Year at the 2019 Esports Awards, Spanish competitive crew G2 Esports also took Team of the Year.
For so long known as the games company with just one game (albeit one of the world's biggest), Riot Games this year celebrated the 10 year anniversary of "League of Legends," announcing plans for a full slate of alternative offerings, including mobile spin-off "League of Legends Wild Rift," autochess derivative "Teamfight Tactics" and digital card game "Legends of Runeterra."
Kyle Giersdorf was another high-profile multiple winner, already famous for having vanquished all-comers at the first "Fortnite" World Cup mid-year (and scooping $3m USD in the process). He was given not only PC Rookie of the Year but also overall PC Player of the Year.
On console, it was fighting game expert Dominique McLean (aka SonicFox) who was the category's Player of the Year; Console Rookie of the Year went to "Call of Duty" 2019 World Champion and World Championship MVP, Chris Lehr (aka Simp).
Brazilian "Rainbow Six: Siege" pro Thiago Reis, better known by his screen name SexyCake, won Play of the Year, having emerged victorious in the final moments of a 1 versus 3 face-off at the game's 2019 Invitational competition.
Held at the Esports Stadium in Arlington, Texas on November 16, the 2019 Esports Awards also included recognition for match commentators, videographers, reporters and industry agencies.
Among other awards, Counter-Strike ex-pro Danny Sørensen (aka zonic) was named Coach of the Year, his Astralis team having collected silverware from a string of top-tier tournaments including the Intel Extreme Masters and multiple ESL Pro League seasons.
Matthew Haag ( aka Nadeshot), founder and CEO of esports and merchandising organization 100 Thieves, which is co-owned by sports franchise businessman Dan Gilbert, musician Drake and record industry exec Scooter Braun, was named Esports Personality of the Year.
